Canadiens goaltender prospect Jacob Fowler is off to a hot start to his NCAA career, and he has just racked up another significant milestone. The third-round pick notched his first career shutout Sunday night in a road victory over the University of Connecticut (UCONN). Fowler made 31 saves, 17 of which came in the first period to help improve Boston College to 9-2-1 on the season.

Fowler has taken the NCAA by storm, playing in every single contest for the Eagles thus far. Despite being a freshman, Boston College is leaning on him in the crease every single night, and it’s paying off for them. It’s the perfect scenario for the Canadiens, as their top goalie prospect is getting plenty of playing time.

And Fowler is certainly earning that playing time, posting a 2.14 GAA and a .926 SV% in 13 games this season. He earned Hockey East goaltender of the month honours for October and may very well be on pace to earn them again in November. He’s been incredible so far this season.

Fowler has a few more weeks here before he and many of his BC teammates head off to Sweden to compete for the United States at the World Juniors. The Canadiens goalie will have to battle with Red Wings prospect and 2023 second-round pick Trey Augustine for the crease. Augustine has a 9-2-1 record with a 2.99 GAA and a 9.13 SV% with Michigan State.  He was in net for the Americans at the World Juniors last year in Halifax, where the Americans placed third.

The Canadiens needed goalie depth heading into the 2023 draft, hence the selection of three netminders. Fowler was the first goalie they chose, and so far, he’s looking like a fine selection. You never know for sure how goalies will pan out, but he’s in the right place. Boston College has churned out several good goalies over the last five to ten years.

Joseph Woll, Spencer Knight and Thatcher Demko all came from BC, and the Canadiens are hoping Fowler is next in line to successfully graduate from the program. So far, so good.
