Canadiens forward Kirby Dach has undergone surgery to repair his ACL and MCL, which he tore in a game versus Chicago earlier this season. Dach is expected to miss the remainder of the season. Now Dach is officially on the road to recovery with the hope of being able to return to form as strong as ever.

Although Dach will miss significant time, an ACL and MCL injury is not as devastating to a player’s career as it once was. And fortunately for Dach, he’s far from a trailblazer on this front, with several players having gone through this before. In  2011, Evgeni Malkin tore the same ligaments in his knee, missing the remainder of that season. The following season, after knee surgery, Malkin had the best year of his career, scoring 50 goals and winning the Art Ross and Hart Memorial trophy.

Obviously, the expectation isn’t that Dach will do the same, but rather just to suggest he can return to form and still be an extremely valuable member of the Canadiens moving forward. Dach was coming off of a career year and looked to build on that this season. He looked fantastic on opening night versus the Maple Leafs before suffering the injury in his next game.

After his surgery, Dach carried on the Canadiens strange tradition of wearing a Louis Vuitton bucket hat. I say we call it the “brotherhood of the traveling bucket hat.” It’s a funny gag but also a sad reminder of how common this has been for the Canadiens over the last few seasons. Injuries are a part of the sport, but it sure would be nice if the Canadiens could catch a break every now and then on this front.

Dach should be ready to go for next season, hopefully with no lingering effects from knee surgery, where he can put his talents on display once again for Canadiens fans. For now, the Canadiens must learn to live without Dach, something easier said than done.
