The Montreal Canadiens have not had a lot of luck when it comes to injuries lately. And by lately, we mean over the past two years or so.

No team in the league had more players miss time than the Canadiens last season. The same could be said about the 2021-22 Canadiens as well. Injury announcements and updates were about as frequent as an optional practice each of those seasons.

This season has not been any better. Kirby Dach left the second game of the season with a season-ending knee injury and Kaiden Guhle missed the end of the team’s third game of the season and is currently listed as day to day. That is not a horrible outcome, but the first few games of the season have been a stark reminder of how difficult it has been for this team to escape a game without incident.

The Canadiens did get some positive news on the injury front as they prepare to face the Washington Capitals on Saturday night. Not only was Guhle’s injury less severe than originally feared, but Christian Dvorak was also back in a regular jersey at practice on Friday morning.

Dvorak missed significant time to end last season and that injury carried over into the 2023-24 season. The team initially said he would be out of the lineup until November, but it seems he may be back a little bit early.

After seeing so many players go down with somewhat innocent looking injuries that turned in to long term absences last season, it is surprising to see a player return sooner than expected.

There are no guarantees Dvorak makes his season debut tonight, but he is taking contact at practice which is always the last step before a player gets back in the lineup. So, even if it is not tonight, it will not be long.

With Dach out of the lineup, Alex Newhook was moved to center after a couple of strong games on the wing to begin the season. With Dvorak playing in the middle of the ice, we should see Newhook move back to the wing in the near future.
