The Montreal Canadiens entered training camp with their blue line picture already pretty clear.

Mike Matheson and David Savard will play big roles in the team’s top four as the two key veterans on defense. The Canadiens also regularly used five rookies on defense last season and it seemed impossible for anyone to jump over the wall of rookies which includes Kaiden Guhle, Johnathan Kovacevic, Jordan Harris, Arber Xhekaj and Justin Barron.

Youngster Logan Mailloux did everything he could to disrupt that plan. He started out just okay at camp but seemed to improve with each viewing and displayed incredible offensive abilities as training camp progressed.

The 20 year old had a tremendous season with the London Knights a year ago as he scored 25 goals and 53 points in 59 games. At 6’3″ and 212 pounds he brings some physicality and toughness with his offense, and he made quite an impression at training camp.

Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis was impressed with what he saw from the 2021 first round draft pick. When asked about Mailloux, the Habs bench boss had plenty of great things to say.

Following practice on Wednesday, St. Louis was asked about Mailloux being sent down and he commented, “We want him to play big minutes in Laval. He had an excellent camp. He has a bright future in front of him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets called up this season.”

That is a pretty big statement coming from the team’s head coach. Sure, St. Louis is not the general manager who makes the final decisions on transactions but he obviously plays a big role in what players make the team and which players would eventually be added to the roster.

With such effucive praise coming from St. Louis, you can bet Mailloux will be one of the first players called up when the inevitable injuries occur this season.
