The Montreal Canadiens had a number of injuries last season that lingered much longer than anyone originally expected.

Joel Edmundson had an injury at the beginning of the season that sounded minor but dragged well into the season. Sean Monahan’s injury status seemingly went half the season without being updated. Several others had injuries that just took far longer to recover from than the original timeline would have suggested.

Mike Matheson was one of those players as he had a minor injury in training camp and missed more time than the team said he would. He finally came back and played quite well when he was healthy, but it took much longer than expected to get him on the ice. Well, here we are again a year later and Matheson is injured yet again and updates are few and far between.

He was supposed to play in a game on September 27th but was announced as a late scratch. The team then announced midway through the game that his absence was precautionary. After the game they said it wasn’t really anything serious but it was a lower body injury.

Well, now we are five days later and there hasn’t been any further update or announcement. He has not played a game since then and is not skating with the team. Is it time to start worrying about Matheson’s injury status? The team downplayed it so much after his scratch that it appeared he would be back immediately.

It is nearly a week later and the only update we can find on him is that he was on the ice by himself a couple days ago.

With only two preseason games remaining, including a contest with the Toronto Maple Leafs this evening, you would hope Matheson would be back by now. The lack of updates are starting to cause concern as this is eerily similar to what happened last season before Matheson ended up missing the team’s first 17 games of the year.

Hopefully that isn’t the case again this year, but the lack of communication from the team is going to cause any Canadiens fan with a memory that lasts longer than 12 months to start to get nervous.
