The Montreal Canadiens are taking on the New Jersey Devils in their first preseason game of the 2023-24 season.

After three days of on ice scrimmages and practices, and the annual Red vs White game at the Bell Centre to kick off training camp, the Canadiens are taking part in their first actual game tonight.

The Habs iced an exciting lineup that included Alex Newhook centering monster wingers Juraj Slafkovsky and Josh Anderson as well as Owen Beck between Joshua Roy and Jesse Ylonen as a trio of youngsters who are looking to earn a role on the team this season.

The Canadiens drew an early power play in the first period, and made no mistake finding the back of the net for the first time this season. It was a bit of a broken play as Ylonen carried the puck into the attacking zone and had it knocked off his stick, but Xavier Simoneau gathered it up and immediately fired a cross ice pass to Roy who was heading toward the net.

Roy did a quick stickhandle, froze the Devils goaltender and then fired a wrist shot past him to open the scoring.

Roy is one of the Habs best prospects and will be looking to make the NHL team in his first pro season. He was among the top scorers in the QMJHL for the past two years and plays a smart defensive role as well. He looked great in his first scoring chance of the year, opening the scoring for the Canadiens.

The 20 year old winger will need to prove himself quickly to the management team and coaching staff but he is off to a great start with a beautiful shot to open the scoring for the Canadiens.
