The Montreal Canadiens were not a big player in free agency this offseason, but that will change in the future.

The Habs just are not expected to be a contender this season and wisely chose to not spend money on free agents knowing they aren’t going to push them into the playoffs anyway. In a few years, when the team is closer to competing, and have a few bad contracts come off the books, they could look to get more aggressive in free agency.

One player they may be looking to acquire in the future was one of the marquee free agents this offseason.

Alex Killorn just signed with the Anaheim Ducks and will earn $25 million over the next four seasons. After that? He seems open to joining the Canadiens, a team he cheered for while he was growing up in the Montreal area.

Killorn was on the Raw Knuckles podcast with former Canadiens winger Chris Nilan and he was asked about eventually playing for the Canadiens. Killorn said they were not one of the teams that contacted him this summer, which makes sense, but he would be willing to join the Canadiens to close out his career.

The 33 year old said it would be a special place to play, even more a year to close out his career. He also mentioned the connections he has to the organization as his former teammates like Martin St Louis and Vincent Lecavalier are in the Canadiens organization now.

Killorn is under contract with the Ducks for the next four seasons so he will be 37 when he is next on the open market. At that point, the Canadiens should be a very competitive team, and a veteran winger like Killorn who has already won two Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning would be an excellent hardworking, leader to bring in to help the Canadiens try to reach the top of the mountain as well.
