The Montreal Canadiens just held their development camp in early July and it was always fun to catch a glimpse of the prospects in the organization hitting the ice whenever we get the chance.
It turns out, we will get another chance to see the youngest players in the organization once again in September. The Canadiens will have a rookie camp a few days ahead of their main training camp where the players who are mostly ticketed to head back to Junior or the minor leagues get together for a few days.
It was just announced that they will also take part in the Prospects Challenge tournament. The rookies will start rookie camp in Montreal on September 13th by reporting for medical testing and off-ice sessions. They will then play three games against other rookie teams at the annual tournament in Buffalo, which they also did last year as well.
The Canadiens youngsters will face the Buffalo Sabres prospects on Friday, September 15th, then take on a team of Boston Bruins prospects on Saturday, September 16th and a team of young Ottawa Senators future hopefuls on Monday, September 18th.
The team will be coached by the AHL’s Laval Rocket coaching staff with J.F. Houle leading the way and the games will take place at the LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo.
It is a great, fun way to start off the 2023-24 season. Though most of the players taking part in the prospects challenge won’t be on the Canadiens radar to begin this season, some of the team’s most recent draft picks as well as young player who could push for roster spots in the coming seasons will be in the lineup.
The Canadiens rookie camp will lead into the main training camp for the team and they will play their first preseason game on September 25th against the New Jersey Devils.
