The Montreal Canadiens opted to select overager Jared Davidson in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, and since then, he has performed well with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL.

The 21-year-old played his entire WHL career with the Thunderbirds and eclipsed point-per-game totals (89 points in 64 games, and 82 points in 60 games) in each of his last two seasons. Davidson also performed well during the playoffs this year and last, compiling 24-28-52 totals through 44 post-season contests.

Selected as an overager, Davidson is somewhat of a late bloomer that has continued rounding out his game, in preparation for his professional career. While he remains unsigned at the NHL level, his junior career has come to an end, and he is set to battle for a roster spot in Laval in 2023-24. He does have an AHL-only contract. His leadership, determination and blend of skill and hockey IQ will surely help him at the next level.

Assuming he signs his ELC and turns pro, the question of where he will play in the lineup, and what sort of production he will put up becomes a curious one. Let’s predict his potential point totals.

Expectations for Davidson’s first pro season

One thing about Davidson’s game that really stands out is his wicked shot, be it a powerful one-timer or his great release, he is able to beat goalies clean. I believe it is something that will translate to the pro ranks, and while a transitional period is likely, I think he could get close to 20-25 goals, maybe more if all things go right.

His playmaking is also a strong suit of his game, as he is a great passer; as evidenced by his ability to produce similar goal and assist totals in 2021 and 2022. I believe with the right linemates and ample opportunity on the power play, Davidson will be able to put his passing abilities to work. If he continues the trend of producing around the same range of assists as goals, I can see him posting 20-25 assists to match his potential 20-25 goal output.

Given his poise and play during the WHL Playoffs, and throughout the Memorial Cup tournament, which led to the Thunderbirds winning the WHL championship, and being runner-up for the memorial cup championship, Davidson showcased his ability to perform in the biggest games.

It’s likely that the Habs scouting team took in some Memorial Cup action, and had to have been pleased by Davidson’s play. If he can continue the upward trend in his development, he should be an important piece for J.F. Houle’s roster in 2023-24 and a lock to get his entry-level contract for the following season.
