If you haven’t heard of Montreal Canadiens prospect Logan Mailloux by this point, it’s fair to assume you have been living under a rock. He entered the 2021 draft as quite a controversial player, renouncing his draft rights; due to his actions during his time in Sweden. Habs then GM, Marc Bergevin ignored Mailloux’s request and still decided to select him.

Fast forward to 2023, and Mailloux has done everything that the league and the Canadiens organization have asked of him; in working towards a chance to redeem himself. He also managed to get back to playing, and produced at an impressive pace with the London Knights, scoring 25 goals, and 53 points in 59 games. Mailloux showed off his skating, crisp passing and heavy shot – displaying some offence – which the Canadiens could certainly use.

Mailloux joined 37 other prospects during the Habs prospect development camp, and he stood out for all the right reasons. He is big, mobile, strong and able to create offence. His one knock is defensive play, and he has improved on it a lot over the past season. I think it will be hard to keep this guy off of the Canadiens’ roster come October.

NHL Comparison For Canadiens Prospect Logan Mailloux?

It’s the NHL off-season, so why not dive into who Mailloux most resembles from current NHL defensemen? He stands out because of his large frame, at 6’3” tall, 212 lbs, and his ability to move around the ice with such ease. Add his offensive prowess to his toolkit, and this guy adds an element to the Canadiens’ blue line that they don’t currently have.

When I watch Mailloux play, be it from highlights, OHL play and his performance at the Canadiens’ rookie camp, I see a player who can take over the game in all three zones and should he improve on his transition game and defensive play, I see one current player as a comparison. I am not suggesting that he will ever be as good as Alex Pietrangelo, but the combination of size, skating and poise are quite similar.

Should Mailloux turn out to be even half the player that Pietrangelo is, I don’t think you will hear a peep out of anybody. A two-time Stanley Cup champion, during both of which he was the number-one defenseman. Pietrangelo is a Hall of Fame player, so the comparison is very high praise to a player that is yet to play an NHL game, but he has the tools to be an effective player for the Canadiens.

So, in the interest of not getting ahead of ourselves, we must let him be the first Logan Mailloux. But it’s fun to compare and see what might happen in the future.
