Montreal Canadiens prospect Sean Farrell fell to the fourth round of his NHL Draft, but he is starting to look like he could be a key offensive contributor for the Habs in the near future.
Farrell was taken 124th overall in the 2020 draft, though he would have gone sooner if he was a little bigger. The super skilled and elite passing left winger is 5’9″ and 178 pounds, but he has always piled up points at every level.
He is surely showing that he won’t be slowed down in college hockey. The 21 year old scored ten goals and 28 points in 24 NCAA games at Harvard last season. He has been even better this year, with seven goals and 18 points in 11 games so far in his second collegiate campaign.
He was great once again last night. After scoring the game winning goal in overtime on Friday night, to go with his assist earlier in that win, Farrell added three more points on Saturday. A five point weekend wasn’t enough to help Harvard win both games, as they squeaked out a win on Friday but fell 6-4 to Colgate.
Farrell got Harvard on the board in the second period, tying the score at one. He was able to steal the puck from an opposing player and get the puck to a teammate in the offensive zone. Farrell immediately gets to open ice and readies for a pass and when it comes, he hammers it past the goalie.
The Habs prospect was able to add his second of the night just over 30 seconds later. He helped win a battle behind the net then got to the front of the crease where he redirected a point shot into the net to give Harvard a lead.
Harvard would allow four straight goals after taking a 3-1 lead, but Farrell would help them pull within one. He isn’t necessarily the quarterback on the power play but he sort of acts as one from the half wall. He moves the puck around the perimeter before a shooting lane opens up and he fires a shot on net.
The goalie stops it but the rebound ends up at the top of the crease where it gets knocked into the net, giving Farrell his third point of the night and fifth point of the weekend.
Known mostly as a passer and setup man, Farrell’s quick release and hard shot were on full display in Saturday night’s loss. The 21 year old winger is having another tremendous season and is now second in the entire country in points per game on the season.
Farrell will have an interesting decision to make at season’s end, and could become a Montreal Canadiens contributor as soon as this spring if he continues performing at this rate.
