The Montreal Canadiens pinned a lot of their hopes on Alex Galchenyuk back in 2012 when they selected him third overall. It was one of the first decisions Marc Bergevin made after being hired as general manager, but it just didn’t work out.

After six seasons in Montreal, Galchenyuk was traded straight up for Max Domi. Bergevin had seen enough and was ready to move on from his first big draft pick. It appears the rest of the NHL was not so quick to sour on the forward.

While he was supposed to turn into the Canadiens first line centre they were so desperate for, he ended up being a second or third line winger instead. He had a couple of good seasons with Montreal, including a 30 goal and 56 point campaign in 2015-16.

Galchenyuk’s production dropped off quickly after that, but the list of teams that want him continues to grow. The 28 year old just added another new team to his list as he signed for the remainder of this season with the Colorado Avalanche.

Galchenyuk is now on his 8th different team. That number is remarkably high when you consider he was still with the Canadiens, his initial team, in 2018.

Since then, Galchenyuk played one season with the Arizona Coyotes before being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He played half a season with the Pens but was then dealt to the Minnesota Wild where he played 14 games.

He then signed with the Ottawa Senators for a season but was dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes after just eight games. He lasted two days, DAYS, in Carolina before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was there long enough to lose a playoff series to the Canadiens before signing back in Arizona for a season.

He was on a PTO with the Avalanche ahead of this season but was injured in training camp. When he recovered he signed an AHL deal with Colorado and scored seven points in seven games. He will now join the defending Stanley Cup champions.
