The Montreal Canadiens held the first overall pick in the NHL Draft, which they obviously had plenty of time to ponder about before making their choice.

They also had the first overall pick of the second round, which meant they had all night after round one to consider who they would take to open the marathon of picks on day two of the NHL Draft.

They decided to take Owen Beck of the Mississauga Steelheads. Jagger Firkus or Noah Warren would have been big hits with the fan base, but the team decided to take Beck, who was not a really highly touted prospect. He had a strong two-way season, but his 51 points in 60 games don’t jump off the screen and suggest he is an elite offensive player.

Canadiens Prospect Owen Beck Has 6 Point Night

It would be hard to convince anyone in the Hamilton Bulldogs organization that Beck is not an elite offensive player. Especially after the weekend he just had.

Beck entered the weekend with just three points in his first five games of the OHL season. He would finish the weekend just outside the top ten in the league in goals and points.

It started with a power play assist midway through the first period. Beck got the puck down low on the goal line and took it around the net. He found fellow second round 2022 NHL Draft pick Luca Del Bel Belluz in the slot and he fired a wrist shot into the back of the net.

His second point of the night was a very similar play as he found Ethan Del Mastro from the goal line and he hammered a one timer home.

His third point was yet another primary assist as he picked up the puck in his own zone, carried it all the way into the attacking zone off the rush before dishing the puck to Kai Schwindt and heading for the net. Schwindt would send the puck home with a quick wrist shot and Beck had three assists.

His fourth point came when he was fortunate to have a defender’s stick break on a clearing attempt in the final seconds of the second period. Beck gathered the puck in the offensive zone and slid it to Schwindt who made the Bulldogs pay for their error.

Midway through the third period, Beck wins an offensive zone faceoff before getting set up along the half wall. He quickly gets the puck and once again finds Schwindt with a cross-ice pass and he sends home his third goal of the night, all of which came off passes by Beck.

Late in the game, Beck was in the exact same spot and this time he received a pass from Schwindt who finally returned the favour by setting up Beck. The Canadiens prospect zipped home a quick one-timer and had his 6th point of the night.

The next night, Beck would score a couple of goals and also pick up a secondary assist on the Steelheads third goal.

It would bring his total for the weekend up to three goals and six assists for nine points in two games. He now has six goals and 12 points in seven games on the season and is looking like a fantastic prospect for the Canadiens.

There must have been some humming and hawing among the Canadiens scouts and management team as they prepared for day two of the NHL Draft. Whoever decided to stick with Beck as the team’s pick to start round two is looking pretty smart this Monday morning.
