The Montreal Canadiens continued to take care of off ice business in the midst of their busy preseason schedule.
The Habs played (and lost) six exhibition games so far and will wrap things up on Thursday and Saturday with a pair of games against the Ottawa Senators. These two final games are part of the Kraft Hockeyville contest and will be played in Atlantic Canada.
Before the team heads on a plane for Gander, Newfoundland for tomorrow night’s game and then Bouctouche, New Brunswick in the preseason finale on Saturday. These are the final chances for hopeful players to prove they are ready to make the NHL roster and play on opening night on October 12th.
Canadiens Sign Logan Mailloux To Entry-Level Contract
While the team prepares for those tune-up games, general manager Kent Hughes has kept bust negotiating contracts with prospects. Yesterday, he signed Owen Beck to an entry level contract, and today he did the same with Logan Mailloux.
Mailloux, the Canadiens first round pick from the 2021 NHL Draft, signed a three-year entry-level contract with the organization that drafted him. His contract will carry a cap hit of $897,500.
The 19 year old defenceman played last season with the London Knights, but was limited to just 12 games played. He scored three goals and nine points in those games, but it was another season where he did not get a lot of game action.
In his draft season, the OHL shut down for the year, and Mailloux went to Sweden to play in a Tier-3 pro league. He suited up for 19 games that season, scoring seven goals and 15 points.
The 6’3″ and 214 pound right shooting defenceman has all the tools to become a key part of the Habs blue line going forward. However, he is going to need to get more game action in this season to develop his talents.
Right now, Mailloux is still injured from a shoulder injury suffered in a fight last season. He will be heading back to Junior whenever he is healthy enough to suit up for games, and should be a huge part of an always stacked London Knights team.
His contract will also slide ahead a year once he is sent to Junior, meaning it won’t kick in until the 2023-24 season when he is likely to play his first pro campaign.
