Montreal Canadiens: Max Domi Has High Praise For Luke Richardson

The Montreal Canadiens just hired Stephane Robidas as assistant coach for the upcoming NHL season. This fills out their bench as Robidas joins Trevor Letowksi and Alex Burrows as assistants to Martin St. Louis.

The vacancy that Robidas is filling was opened up when Luke Richardson left Montreal. He was the team’s assistant coach that ran the defence until last month when he was hired by the Chicago Blackhawks to be their new head coach.

Richardson was well liked during his time in Montreal, and will be missed but the organization after leaving for the Blackhawks. That was made Chrystal clear by one former Canadiens player who quickly signed on to join Richardson in Chicago.

Max Domi was an unrestricted free agent this summer and signed a one year, $3 million contract with the Blackhawks. He scored 39 points in 72 games last season, which he split between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Carolina Hurricanes. Now he heads to Chicago and Richardson was a big reason why.

As soon as Richardson was hired by the Blackhawks, Domi let it be known that he wanted to be reunited with his former coach.

Domi played two seasons for the Montreal Canadiens, from 2018-20. Those two seasons were Richardson’s first two seasons behind the Habs bench, so he would have been there when Domi scored a career high 28 goals and 72 points in 2018-19.

While Domi signed with Chicago, most of their moves this offseason have been to tear down what pieces of value they do have. Alex Debrincat, Kirby Dach, and Dylan Strome are gone, so there should be a big role opened up for Domi with the Blackhawks.

If he can find that same intensity, and consistency that he had in his first season with the Canadiens, and first season working with Richardson, Domi is going to have another great season.

Unfortunately, it just shows how great of a coach and respected of a person that the Canadiens lost when the Blackhawks chose their new head coach.
