The Montreal Canadiens were major sellers at the trade deadline last season. Tyler Toffoli, Ben Chiarot, Brett Kulak, and Artturi Lehkonen were all shipped out for first or second round picks and prospects.

One of the few players that the Canadiens actually traded for was William Lagesson. He didn’t get much of audition with the Canadiens, playing only three games after the trade deadline, but he did find a new home for the 2022-23 season.

Lagesson has signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes for the upcoming season. It is a two-way deal that will see the 26 year old left defenceman make $750,000 if he plays at the NHL level, or he will take home $275,000 if he plays the whole year in the minors.

On a team like the Hurricanes, with a great group of defenders at the NHL level, Lagesson is likely to play most of the season with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL. He did play 11 AHL games last season, in addition to the 33 NHL games he played with the Edmonton Oilers and Habs.

Lagesson wasn’t really given a chance to show what he can do in Montreal. He was acquired on March 21st and played his first game in a Habs uniform on March 26th against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

He hadn’t had much time to sort himself out with his new team and had a couple of costly turnovers in that game. He then sat out as a healthy scratch for nearly a month, before playing a pair of games at the end of April to close out the season.

Lagesson has now played 60 NHL games in his career and has seven points. The Canadiens appear to still be in the market for a depth defender, but it won’t be Lagesson returning to the team to fill that role.
