The Montreal Canadiens have released the details of their upcoming Development Camp. It will be the first chance many fans get to catch a glimpse of the team’s newest prospects that were drafted on Thursday and Friday.

The camp will take place over the next four days, from July 10 – 13 in Brossard at the team’s practice facility. The first day will just be for players to report, meet and greet one another and do some off-ice testing.

The 40 players in attendance will then take to the ice for three days for practice sessions and scrimmages. They will be broken into two groups to practice separately and then have a scrimmage against each other at the end of each day.

The Canadiens were busy at the NHL Draft, making 11 selections, and all of those new prospects will be on the ice this week. That, of course, includes first overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky and fellow first round pick Filip Mesar.

Of the 40 players that will be taking part, 23 are forwards, 12 are defencemen and there are five goaltenders as well. Two of those defencemen, first round picks Logan Mailloux and Kaiden Guhle, will not take part in on-ice sessions as both are listed as injured.

Mailloux has not played since having shoulder surgery months ago, but is in Montreal rehabbing the injury to get ready for next season with the London Knights.

Guhle just finished the Memorial Cup about two weeks ago and is likely headed to the World Juniors in August. His “injury” might be more of a rest for the young player as he prepares for a long upcoming 2022-23 season that could include a World Junior tournament in August and his first taste of NHL action.

There are a couple of notable omissions from this group. First is Mattias Norlinder, though he has been playing pro so maybe he is past the “development camp” age. Another is Jan Mysak but the training camp for Czechia’s World Junior camp is starting very soon so perhaps that is why he will be absent.

The only other absences appear to be Russian prospects Alexander Gordin, Daniil Sobolev and Dmitri Kostenko. Of course, with everything going on in that part of the world it is understandable.

One other player that isn’t attending is Brett Stapley. He just finished the final year of his college career and the Canadiens have about another month to sign him or he will become a free agent. This pretty much guarantees he will become a free agent just after helping Denver win a national championship.
