The Montreal Canadiens made plenty of noise in round one of the 2022 NHL Draft. They took Juraj Slafkovsky with the first pick, gambling on the big wingers combination of size and skill.

He had success in international tournaments for Slovakia, but only had ten points in 31 Liiga games. He was named MVP of the Olympics after scoring seven goals in seven games and also had nine points in eight games at the Men’s World Championships.

Shortly after that, the Canadiens pulled off two huge trades. They sent Alexander Romanov and a fourth round pick to the New York Islanders for the 13th overall pick. They immediately flipped that pick and a third round pick for centre Kirby Dach from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Dach is a 21 year old centre that is 6’4″ and 197 pounds. He hasn’t broken out offensively yet at the NHL level, but has all the tools to be a solid two-way centre in the future. Time will tell, but the Habs went with Dach down the middle and Slafkovsky on the wing instead of the consensus top pick, Shane Wright at centre.

They now enter day two of the NHL Draft with 10 more picks to make. The biggest names are obviously off the board already, but there are plenty of intriguing names left on the second day of the draft.

The Canadiens promise to be busy once again, though no one can say they have any more jaw dropping trades left in them. Time well tell I suppose. One thing is sure and that is they will make plenty of selections today.

Who will they target with their plethora of picks? Let’s take a look at a couple of intriguing players who may slip for a few rounds but could turn out to be home runs in a few years.
