The Montreal Canadiens started off day two of the 2022 NHL Draft by selecting Owen Beck with the 33rd overall selection.

Beck is a centre with decent size and plenty of skill for the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League. He is 6’0″ and 190 pounds and just finished his rookie season in the OHL.

Beck is a right shot centre who scored 21 goals and 51 points in 68 games last season. He missed the entire 2020-21 season due to the OHL being shut down for Covid reasons. He added six more points in ten playoff games for the Steelheads.

Beck was named to the second Rookie All-Star Team in the OHL at season’s end and is obviously a very smart kid as he was picked as the Scholastic Player of the Year in the OHL as well as the entire CHL this year.

Apparently, his backup plan is to become a doctor if this hockey thing doesn’t work out. That’s not a bad backup plan.

Beck, a Port Hope, Ontario native is sure to head back to the OHL next season, and probably the following year as well, to continue his development. He should be a big time scorer in his 18 year old season, after scoring nearly a point per game as a 17 year old.

The Canadiens hold a total of ten picks today, with their next one slated to be at 62nd overall. That pick was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers in the Brett Kulak deal.

The Canadiens also have two picks in the third round, two picks in the fourth round and could use a few of them to move up and select a little earlier in the second round.

Beck is added to a draft class that already includes Juraj Slafkovsky who went first overall and Filip Mesar who was the 26th overall pick.
