The Montreal Canadiens season ended a month ago, but there are many players in the organization that are still playing hockey.
The Laval Rocket are awaiting the start of the conference finals next week when they will play for a chance to advance to the Calder Cup Final. Prospects Kaiden Guhle, Arber Xhekaj, Jan Mysak, Xavier Simoneau, Joshua Roy, William Trudeau and Daniil Sobolev are all still alive in the CHL playoffs.
And a few Habs players are playing in the World Championships. Two of them just advanced to the gold medal game where they will face off, while another prospect is heading to the bronze medal game.
Sean Farrell scored a big second period goal for USA to temporarily tie the semifinal game at two against Finland, but the host nation climbed back to win the game. Farrell cut to the middle of the ice and fired a perfect wrist shot over the goaltender’s glove on the short side.
It was Farrell’s second goal and sixth point in his ninth game of the tournament. Pretty decent production from a 20 year old college player on a big stage.
But it wasn’t enough to beat Finland, who got a big goal from Joel Armia. The Habs winger had an assist on Finland’s first goal that tied the game at one apiece in the first period. Finland would take a 3-2 lead into the final frame, before Armia extended the lead to two goals with a pinpoint shot of his own.
The two points on the day gave Armia four goals and seven points in nine games at the tournament. It is nice to see him finish his season on a positive note after a tough year with the Canadiens.
Armia will play for gold in his home country against Canadiens winger Josh Anderson and Team Canada. Anderson helped Canada advance past Czechia in the semifinals today by getting an assist on an early third period goal that put the game out of reach for Czechia.
Anderson made a good defensive play to break up a chance in front of his own net before Cole Sillinger went end to end and scored. This made it 5-1 and pretty much ruined any chance of a big comeback.
Farrell and the United States team will now face Czechia for a bronze medal tomorrow while Anderson will go head to head with Armia for gold.
