The Montreal Canadiens missed the NHL Playoffs by a wide margin but their AHL affiliate will be embarking on a postseason run.

While the Habs were in the postseason a year ago, we have never seen the Rocket take part in a playoff series. This is the fifth year of their existence, but they have not qualified for the playoffs before this season.

They did have a great season last year, but there were no playoffs in the Canadian Division.

This season, the rocket battled down to the wire, but ended up finishing third overall in the North Division. Getting into the top three was important, because the fourth and fifth seeds will play each other in a sort of “play-in” round to get to face the Utica Comets in the round of 16.

So, technically, the Rocket have already advanced to round two, just by finishing third in their own division. That series will get underway this Friday, May 6th in Syracuse. Game 2 will take place the next night, Saturday, May 7th in Syracuse as well.

The series shifts back to Laval for their first ever home playoff game on Thursday, May 12th and then Saturday, May 14 at Place Bell as well. This round is just a Best-of-5, so the series decider, is necessary will be played on Tuesday, May 17th in Syracuse.

It promises to be a close series. The two teams finished the season six points apart, with the Crunch ahead, but they also played four more games. The seeding in the AHL this season was based on points percentage and Syracuse at .599 came out just ahead of the Rocket at .590.

Covid outbreaks lead to the unbalanced schedule, but the two teams had pretty much the same winning percentage after playing more than 70 games each. It should be a great series and it all begins Friday night.
