Montreal Canadiens: National Funeral to be Held for Guy Lafleur
Montreal Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur passed away on Friday at the age of 70 after a battle with lung cancer.
Tributes and memorials have poured in over the past few days, and the Montreal Canadiens organization and the province of Quebec have announced details of the upcoming funeral and memorial for the Hall of Fame Habs winger.
The Premier of Quebec, Francois Legault, announced that a national funeral would be held for Lafleur. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd at Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral in downtown Montreal at 11 A.M.
Before the funeral, fans of the great man and Canadiens player, will have their chance to pay their respects. Visitation will be held on May 1 from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM as well as May 2 from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM.
The Canadiens will also pay their respects to Lafleur by wearing a #10 patch on their sweaters for the remainder of the season. The team will also hold a special ceremony honouring Lafleur ahead of tonight’s game against the Boston Bruins at the Bell Centre. The Bruins and Canadiens had a heated rivalry during Lafleur’s career with the Habs always finding their way on top, often thanks to Lafleur’s heroics.
Guy Lafleur still holds the Canadiens all-time record for points with 1246 which he scored over his 14 seasons with the club. He was the first overall pick in the 1971 NHL Draft and would go on to win five Stanley Cup with the franchise, including four in a row from 1976-79. Lafleur played 58 games in those four Stanley Cup Playoffs combined and scored 36 goals and 87 points.
Lafleur’s points record for the Canadiens is going to stand for many, many years to come. Brendan Gallagher is the closest active Habs player and he is 868 points back of Lafleur’s all-time points record for the franchise.
