Montreal Canadiens fans waited 9 months and 8 days for this news, and it’s finally here. Carey Price will be making his season debut tonight against the New York Islanders. Martin St. Louis confirmed the news this morning.

Cayden Primeau has been sent back to Laval which means if all goes well, Samuel Montembeault will be Price’s backup for the remainder of the season.

Brendan Gallagher couldn’t contain his excitement when he was speaking to the media after this morning’s practice in Brossard.

Carey Price has been working hard for the last month, participating in regular practices nearly every day He even joined the team during their recent two game road trip in New Jersey and Toronto.

Price’s last game goes all the way back to Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals last July. He underwent surgery for a torn meniscus and had many set backs, notably from a weakened hip, another injury that plagued him for most of the last two seasons.

As he was suffering more setbacks, Price made a surprising announcement that he was going to join the NHL’s player substance abuse program. Price admitted to have gone through an addiction with a substance he did not specify. He did it for his mental health, his overall health, and to also be a normal father to his children and husband to wife Angela.

Once out of rehab, Price was a bull in a china shop. Goaltending coach Eric Raymond had to calm Price down and go through a different kind of rehab regime. We were talking about a goaltender who was turning 35 this summer and who’s body was war torn beyond measure. If Price were to return, he would need a different approach to his training and nutrition.

The Canadiens are 20-43-11 this season and have eight games left to the season. The amount of games Price will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis, therefore no announcement has been made as to who will get the start on Saturday against the Washington Capitals.
