After lots of speculation regarding the pending unrestricted free agent, the Montreal Canadiens have finally traded Brett Kulak to the Edmonton Oilers on trade deadline day.
Reports of a bigger deal was rumored but failed. Original reports stated a 2022 2nd round pick coming from Edmonton, however Bob MacKenzie has confirmed defenceman William Lagesson will be part of the deal.
The 2nd round pick is conditional on if the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup finals. If they do, then the 2nd round pick becomes a 2023 pick instead. The Canadiens also receive Edmonton’s 2024 7th round pick in the deal.
Kulak was originally acquired via a trade with the Calgary Flames in 2018 in return for Rinat Valiev and Matt Taormina.
William Lagesson, 26, is a 6’2″ 207 lbs left shooting defenceman. In 30 games with the Oilers this season he has amassed 4 assists. The Swedish native is a defensive first player who passes the puck well. He was drafted in the 4th round by the Oilers in 2014.
