It seems that a third trade might happen as Kent Hughes and company have been going hard after Flames prospect Jakob Pelletier.
Pelletier was the 26th overall pick of the Calgary Flames in the 2019 draft. The 21 year old has yet to make his NHL debut but is currently scorching hot in the AHL with the Stockton Heat. He currently has 20 goals and 26 assists for 46 points in 47 games.
Jakob Pelletier is not the biggest guy in the bar. He’s 5’10” and 181 lbs according to his profile on eliteprospects.com. However, this is a player that Habs fan would immediately fall in love with.
The Quebec City native has a lot in common with Nick Suzuki but from a winger’s perspective. He’s got speed mixed with dangerous offensive skills along with aggressive forechecking tendencies. He can also play center in a pinch as he has shifted often between wing and center when he was in the QMJHL, however he’s much more comfortable at the wing.
Pelletier is being developed slowly and properly in Calgary. If he were to be traded to Montreal, the team would have to continue on his steady progress. This is a player who’s as excitable as Cole Caufield and will immediately become a fan favorite if he lives up to his potential.
It’s no secret that the Flames have been trying to squeeze in Ben Chiarot into their team but reports have been that Kent Hughes has not been willing to take on a sizeable contract in order to get Chiarot to fit the bill. The names of Milan Lucic and Sean Monahan were reported but neither of are interest. Especially with Christian Dvorak, Ryan Poehling and Jake Evans all fighting for a regular spot down the middle.
If Ben Chiarot is traded to the Calgary Flames, don’t expect another 1st round pick to go our way since the Canadiens have already acquired this round’s pick in the Tyler Toffoli trade and Flames GM Brad Treliving would be very reluctant to add a second first rounder.
Instead, high level prospects such as Jakob Pelletier would be in the cards, with the possibility of goaltender Dustin Wolf being part of a package as well.
