The Montreal Canadiens are not short of exciting prospects. Kaiden Guhle is having an excellent year in the WHL, Joshua Roy is currently dominating the QMJHL, currently having 84 points in 43 games. Riley Kidney and Xavier Simoneau are also playing very well in the “Q” while Jan Mysak is flying on a nightly basis with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the OHL.
Ken MacMillan broke down a few prominent prospects currently in the NCAA and Brett Stapley is part of that list, having recorded 40 points in 36 games with the University of Denver.
Roy, Kidney, Simoneau, Mysak and Stapley round up the top scorers out of all the Canadiens’ prospects. Sitting at number 6, tied with Stapley for 40 points, is the Canadiens’ 16th overall pick of the 2020 draft, Kaiden Guhle.
Guhle has been a force to be reckoned with in the WHL. He has recently bulked up and tips the scale over 200 pounds for the first time in his career. The 6’2″ defenceman has increased his hitting game without letting it affect his natural zone coverage. Not only that, but his speed and rapid fire thinking has allowed him to reach a career milestone of 100 points.
Guhle isn’t and won’t be the last defenceman to hit 100 points in the WHL. So much so that he’s actually the 462nd player in history to do so. However, only 16 defenders born after the year 2000 has reached this mark, further indicating the defensive prowess and reputation that the WHL holds.
The native of Sherwood Park, Alberta is coming exactly as advertised. A player with very high hockey IQ who knows exactly where to go defensively and who isn’t afraid to create a rush or join the second wave of attack. Oh and he loves hitting.
Furthermore, Guhle is a leader and has taken on that role since a young age. He was captain of Team Canada at the recent World Juniors, as well as captain of the Prince Albert Raiders, a team he was linked with since 2017 before he was traded to the Edmonton Oil Kings in a blockbuster trade.
Guhle is garnering a lot of comparison to former WHL alumni Morgan Rielly, currently of the Toronto Maple Leafs and to a lesser extent Shea Weber. The Weber comparisons stem a lot from his poise and leadership and not to mention his thunderous body checks.
With Ben Chiarot most likely to be traded, there will be a spot to fill behind Joel Edmundson and Alexander Romanov on the left side of the blue line. There will be a long line of young candidates with Guhle leading the pack, however even if he doesn’t make the NHL right away next season, you can expect him to eat tons of minutes with the Laval Rocket.
