The Montreal Canadiens announced that John Sedgwick has been promoted to Assistant General Manager.

The name John Sedgwick might not be one that is familiar to many people, but this is someone who has been an important pillar to the Canadiens over the last few years. In fact, he is so behind the scenes that a Google search will give you Major General John Sedgwick, who fought in the American Civil War.

This Sedgwick however was hired in 2013 as Vice President of Hockey Operations and Legal Affairs by the Montreal Canadiens. Prior to that he worked for 6 year for the National Hockey League as Manager of Hockey Operations and eventually promoted to Senior Manager of Hockey Operations.

This is the man since 2013 that made sure all the contracts that were signed were legal and was the man that made sure we were never over the salary cap limit. A “Capologist” if you will. It’s clear that Kent Hughes was impressed with his work and said work was applauded mightily in the last few seasons with the implementation of a taxi squad during the shortened COVID seasons.

Anthony Marcotte, who is the voice of the Laval Rocket game on 91.9 FM in Montreal said that Sedgwick’s will be tasked with managing the Rocket.

Luc Gelinas from RDS mentions that John Sedgwick was the only man from the upper brass that did not agree with drafting Logan Mailloux in 2021.

The position of Assistant General Manager was left vacant after Scott Mellanby left the team after he was made aware that he was not going to be promoted as promised by Marc Bergevin and Geoff Molson. Mellanby was told he would become either President or General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens but when he saw (and ultimately told) that he was getting neither position, he resigned.

Our favorite turtleneck-wearing player, Tomas Plekanec, gave his seal of approval on Twitter.

Sedgwick, who speaks French, was interviewed for the vacant General Manager position and ultimately decided to stay onboard the team when Kent Hughes was nominated. His loyalty earned him a promotion.
