Montreal Canadiens: Chris Wideman Will Surely Be Suspended
The Montreal Canadiens played the Boston Bruins last night for the second time this season, and just the second time in nearly two years.
With the All-Canadian Division last season, the two ancient rivals did not play each other once.
With the way the two teams battled all night long, you would think it was the 10th time they have played each other this month. There were big hits, countless scrums and, well, one head butt.
In one of the many scrums that ensued after a whistle, Canadiens defenceman Chris Wideman was tangled up with a Bruins player. Erik Haula of the Bruins came in and grabbed Wideman from behind and had him in a bit of a headlock. Wideman tried to shake free but couldn’t, so he swung his head at Haula and head butted him in the face.
Haula was not pleased by this and took Wideman to the ice, throwing a few punches at the Canadiens blue liner.
Haula was justifiably upset and the Canadiens defenceman is sure to be hearing from the Department of Player Safety today. We have often criticized George Parros and his staff who hand out suspensions, but there is no question that Wideman is deserving of a suspension for this dangerous play.
The Canadiens lost the game 5-1, and they lost Jake Allen early in the first period due to an undisclosed injury. They are sure to also lose Wideman for a few games after he hears from George Parros and discipline is handed out.
