The Montreal Canadiens are in a complete state of disarray on the ice on a nightly basis and it has led to the team’s current 5-15-2 record.
It is starting to sound like the front office is in a similar situation as well.
Marc Bergevin is in the final year of his contract but has not been renewed, even after a trip to the Stanley Cup Final last season. It sounds like he is just playing out the string and then leaving.
There were also rumours earlier today that the team had permission to talk to former Boston Bruins and New York Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton, but not to be the team’s next general manager.
Now, it just came out that Assistant General Manager Scott Mellanby has resigned his position with the team. It was quite odd timing as the Canadiens are in the middle of a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Mellanby has been with the Canadiens almost as long as Bergevin. He was one of Bergevin’s first hires in 2012 after taking over the team’s general managing duties. Mellanby was initially hired as the team’s Director of Player Personnel in 2012, but moved up the chain of command to become an Assistant General Manager in 2014.
The team is in a state of chaos on the ice and the front office is no different now. While the on-ice product has been hard to watch at times this season, the developments about to take place off the ice might be worth keeping a close eye on.
Will Bergevin be next to step down? Will he be fired? Who is coming in to replace Mellanby? Is it time for a complete revamp of the entire front office? We shall too find out.
