Montreal Canadiens winger Cole Caufield is poised for a big season with the Habs.
He was the best player in college hockey last season and had an immediate impact on the Canadiens when he stepped into the NHL lineup. The 20 year old was one of the teams biggest offensive threats in the postseason and he finished third on the team in points with 12.
Though his sights are set high for the upcoming season, it hasn’t gotten off to a terrific start.
Caufield played on a line with Nick Suzuki and Tyler Toffoli in the team’s first preseason game and though he had three of the team’s best scoring chances, he fired two pucks wide and was robbed by Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Ian Scott on the third glorious opportunity. Creating that many chances is a good sign, so it is nothing to worry about, but today Caufield had something to worry about.
He was supposed to play in the team’s Red vs White scrimmage which is an event that is usually a fun filled practice game among teammates where defensive awareness and physicality is turned down a bit and offensive creativity is set to maximum. It should have been a great chance for Caufield to show off some of his tremendous offensive talent.
Unfortunately, Caufield didn’t get to play in the game at all.
He was skating in warmup and took a harmless wrist shot into an open net. He then turned and fell, sliding slowly into the boards in the corner. He got up quickly and seemed okay, but he left the ice and did not take part in the Red vs White game. He was moving so slowly that he was actually back on his feet before he gently grazed the boards.
Dominique Ducharme, the team’s head coach, said that Caufield was feeling a bit uncomfortable on the ice and was kept out of the game for precautionary reasons. He is officially listed as day-to-day on the injured list.
It did not look like much, but it will be worth keeping an eye on Cole Caufield’s status in the next few days to see how quickly he gets back into action.
