The Montreal Canadiens training camp is well underway as they first joined together on Wednesday for medicals and medical exams before hitting the ice for the first time on Thursday.

There are 70 players on the training camp roster and they have been split into three groups to begin the process of picking the team.

Eventually, they will be whittled down to a roster of 23 who form the opening night roster and 20 of those players will suit up in game one of the regular season while three sit as healthy scratches.

We have a long way to go before that, and the next step will be today when the group hits the ice for the annual Red vs White Game. It is a scrimmage that is normally a big hit at the Bell Centre with fans allowed in to watch all of the team’s hopefuls compete in a semi-competitive environment to kick off training camp.

The odd thing about this year’s game is it is taking place after an actual preseason game has taken place.

The Canadiens played a fairly lifeless 60 minutes game against the Toronto Maple Leafs last night. They barely registered a shot on goal in the second period, though a couple of Cole Caufield chances just missed hitting the top corner.

The Habs ended up losing the game 4-1 and then lost the shootout that takes place after preseason games as well.

But today, they get a chance to have some fun in a scrimmage that will be streamed online at 3:00 PM EST on RDS.

The Red vs White scrimmage is usually an entertaining game where there isn’t a lot of contact or physicality but plenty of skill and talent on display.
