Montreal Canadiens players hit the ice for the first time yesterday when 70 players reported for training camp at the Bell Sports Complex.

The 40 forwards, 23 defenders and seven goaltenders skated in three separate groups, and will do the same tomorrow.

There were a handful of absences from camp yesterday, some that were more expected than others.

We all knew that Shea Weber would not be skating as he will be out for the season with various injuries. We were also told that Carey Price might not quite be ready to begin camp either, but there were a few other surprising names on the injured list yesterday. Let’s take a look at them all.

Carey Price failed his physical as he is still working his way back from knee surgery that he had shortly after the playoffs. Though he isn’t available for the first day of camp, he has been skating and head coach Dominique Ducharme later mentioned that he expects Price to be ready for the first game of the regular season.

Paul Byron also underwent offseason surgery, with his necessary to fix an ailing hip. Upon completing the surgery, it was announced that Byron is likely to be out until the end of December.

Joel Edmundson did not skate but he is listed as day-to-day and should be back in action very soon.

Brendan Gallagher did not take part in the opening on-ice session either but he is away from the team for family reasons and will be back over the weekend.

The more surprising news that will make an impact was the absence of Mike Hoffman. He apparently injured his knee while skating in preparation for training camp and is likely to miss the entire camp. Ducharme said he does not expect the sniper to need surgery but he is unlikely to play the first game of the regular season.

Josh Brook and Joel Teasdale also failed their medicals with knee issues. Not much more was announced about the two prospects so we don’t know exactly what the issue is but it sounds unlikely that they will take part in this year’s training camp. Hopefully they will be back in time to prepare for the start of the AHL season with the Laval Rocket.
