The Montreal Canadiens went on a lengthy run in the postseason, which is of course the goal every year.

The only downside to having a successful playoffs is you end up picking later on in the NHL Draft. It’s a sacrifice any NHL team is willing to make to have a chance to play for the Stanley Cup, obviously, but it leaves us fans digging a little deeper to see prospects that could be available for them to choose.

This year, that is more difficult than ever.

Not many prospects played a full season in 2020-21 and some didn’t play hockey at all. That is going to lead to some drastically different lists being compiled by various teams in preparation for tonight’s event. A player that the Canadiens have ranked 15th might not be on another team’s list until 30 or so, and vice versa. It’s going to result in a lot of teams thinking they had a fantastic draft weekend, but the reality is this will be the most difficult NHL Draft to ever project.

The Canadiens do enter the weekend with a plethora of picks. They don’t pick in the first round until late (31st overall), but they have two picks in the second round, two more in the third round and three selections in the fourth round. In total, they currently hold 11 picks in the seven round event.

Of course, tonight we are just focusing on that first round pick. There have been some rumblings that they will deal it, but general manager Marc Bergevin has not traded his first round pick in nine previous drafts with the Canadiens.

If he holds onto it for a tenth straight year, here are three players Habs fans want to see drop to the Canadiens at 31st overall.
