The Montreal Canadiens were supposed to get swept by the Toronto Maple Leafs, but they came back from a 3-1 series deficit and defeated them in seven games.
They were then supposed to get swept by the Winnipeg Jets but ended up doing some sweeping of their own.
And then just like the Jets got swept after sweeping, the Canadiens were supposed to get swept by the strong and terrifying Vegas Golden Knights, but they won the series in six games, winning it 3-2 in overtime tonight.
After the entire hockey world doubted them, the Canadiens just kept on proving everyone wrong, and they’re showing everyone they don’t plan on stopping now.
They are headed to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1993, which also happens to be the last year they won the cup, and are the last Canadian team to win it.
They’re also the first Canadian team to make it to the Final since the Vancouver Canucks did in 2011 against the Boston Bruins.
So, yeah, this is huge, not only for the Canadiens, but for all of Canada. And as every day passes, it’s starting to feel more and more like 93.
The Canadiens once again came together to and win the game as a team, and it’s like they’ve never looked as united as they did in this game – and after, when celebrating.
However, the Golden Knights weren’t going to go down easily, responding to the Canadiens’ goals fast enough and forcing an overtime.
In what was so far the biggest game of the year for the Canadiens, their captain Shea Weber, who hadn’t been able to shoot as well as usual to do a wrist injury, was able to get the opening goal.
Then, Reilly Smith deflected the puck off a shot by Vegas’ Shea (Theodore) and tied it for the Knights.
In the second period, who other than Cole Caufield came in clutch and scored a beautiful goal after using his speed to get past Brayden McNabb and take a high shot on Robin Lehner.
However, in the third period, the Knights responded once again and it was Alec Martinez who scored this time.
The game went to overtime tied at two, and for most of it, it was in Montreal’s zone, but after a huge save by Carey Price, the Canadiens had an odd-man rush that started with Brendan Gallagher. He passed it to Phillip Danault, who managed to get by Zach Whitecloud and pass the puck to Arturri Lehkonen, who then one-timed it and won the game, sending his team to the Final.
The Canadiens have defied all odds and are headed to the Stanley Cup Finals. And who knows what can happen then (enter Patrick Roy’s epic wink here).
The Western Conference Winners (no you didn’t read that wrong) will be facing the winner of the New York Islanders – Tampa Bay Lightning. So don’t forget to keep an eye on Game 7 tonight.
