The Department of Player Safety strikes again. Joel Edmundson of the Montreal Canadiens has been fined $1000 dollars for an apparent “dangerous trip” involving John Tavares during last Saturday’s game versus the Toronto Maple Leafs.

It took a while to figure out when this happened, but it was eventually claimed that it happened at 19:32 of the 2nd period, which would lead to this:

If the officiating were actually consistent, I’d have agreed on a 2-minute penalty for slashing. However, we don’t live in such a world so make what you want out of this play.

It’s interesting to debate what constitutes a suspension or a fine in modern-day hockey. The Tom Wilson incident ended up in an all-out brawl the following night and subsequently getting Pavel Buchnevich getting suspended but nothing for Wilson. Karma did eventually hit Wilson in the form of a knee-to-knee with Flyers’ Nicolas Aube-Kubel.

On our home pond, we can’t ignore some events this season that ended up with no sanctions from the NHL. Such as Joel Armia getting run over by Tyler Myers:

Or Dillon Dube’s head shot on Jesperi Kotkaniemi:

Ironically, the NHL decided to give themselves a refill of their petty cash by handing out a handful of fines yesterday.

Take a look at any social media outlet and you’ll see the raging comment wars about this alleged Edmundson trip. Is it worth the fine? Should there have been a penalty? Hard to keep up while playing “Take a shot every time the refs make a no-call against the Leafs.”
