Montreal Canadiens top prospect Cole Caufield got one last reminder about how great he was in college hockey this season before making his AHL debut.

The Canadiens first round pick in 2019 has been lighting up the scoreboard across college hockey for the past two seasons since being selected by the Habs.

This season, was extremely impressive.

Caufield suited up for the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten Conference. He played 31 games in total this season and scored 30 goals and 52 points. He scored 11 more goals than anyone else in the NCAA and his 52 points were five more than anyone else in the country. He flat out dominated offensively every night.

Caufield was rewarded for this tremendous season by being named the Hobey Baker Award winner this evening. The Hobey Baker is handed out to the best player in college hockey on an annual basis and there is no question that Caufield was the best player in college hockey this year.

The 20 year old right winger will immediately take the next step in his career as he is just about to step on the ice in the AHL for the first time. Caufield will be playing right wing on a line with Jordan Weal and Yannick Veilleux for the Laval Rocket tonight.

Some recent winners of the Hobey Baker include Cale Makar, Jack Eichel and Johnny Gaudreau. Most times, the winner is a third or fourth year player while Caufield won in his second year of college hockey. The only other players to win the Hobey Baker in their first or second season since 1990 are Makar, Eichel, Ryan Duncan, Ryan Miller and Paul Kariya.

Next. Age becoming a factor for Weber. dark

We can all only hope that Caufield turns out as well as Kariya, Gaudreau or Eichel and we will have to wait and see. We won’t have to wait long as he just stepped on the ice with the Laval Rocket for the first time.
