Montreal Canadiens prospects have been making some big headlines recently. Cole Caufield helped USA win the World Junior gold medal with an impressive two-way performance on a line with Matt Beniers and Matt Boldy.

Alexander Romanov shocked a lot of viewers with his terrific two-way play to begin the season for the Canadiens. He is eating up big minutes, getting regular power play time, being physical and smart defensively and looks ready for a top-four role as a 20 year old rookie defenceman.

There are other prospects still taking care of business in their own right, with a little less fanfare.

Jakub Dobes is definitely one of those players. He was named the USHL Goaltender of the Week yesterday for his performance over the past seven days. The goalie for the Omaha Lancers has been excellent all season and this is already the third time he has been named goalie of the week in USA’s top Junior league.

Does played two games last week and allowed just two goals. He stopped 50 shots in that time, so he put up a GAA of 1.00 and a SV% of .962 as the Lancers won a pair of games against the Lincoln Stars.

The Czech Republic native has been the league’s best goaltender all season. He now has a 1.91 GAA and a .926 SV%, both of which are the best in the USHL. He also leads the leagues in games with 17 and is tied for the league lead in wins with 11.

Dobes was a 5th round pick of the Canadiens in the 2020 NHL Draft and wasn’t even ranked to go that high. He is already proving to be far better than anyone believed when the draft was held in June.

The 19 year old is committed to Ohio State University next season where he will look to continue to prove people wrong. Well, everyone except for Marc Bergevin, I suppose.
