Montreal Canadiens owner appointed Order of Canada

Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson has been accused by many Habs fans over the past three years of being a little too frugal with the team’s payroll.

That theory was certainly disproved this offseason when the Habs signed Tyler Toffoli to a $17 million contract, gave Joel Edmundson a $14 million contract, signed Josh Anderson to a $38.5 million deal, agreed to pay Jake Allen just under $10 million over the next three years and re-signed Jeff Petry to a $25 million contract and kept Brendan Gallagher around long term with a $39 million agreement.

If that wasn’t enough to convince his doubters of his generosity, maybe being recognized by the Governor General of Canada will help.

Geoff, and his brother Andrew, were recently appointed to the Order of Canada. The Order of Canada is how the country recognizes people who make a great contribution to the nation. Molson is being recognized for his “entrepreneurial leadership and for his philanthropic contributions, notably through the family’s foundation and other local organizations.”

Molson is a board member for the Molson Foundation which helps fund various organizations in the areas of education, health care, arts and humanities. He is also a board member of the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation which encourages physical activity and and the adoption of a healthy, active lifestyle among under privileged youth. He also serves on the board of directors for the St Mary’s Hospital Foundation where they support they hospital so it is able to provide the best family-centered care possible for the community.

Clearly, the owner, president and CEO of the Montreal Canadiens as well as the Bell Centre and evenko has done some great work for the city of Montreal. He has also done great work to help the Canadiens greatly improve during an offseason when most teams were afraid to spend any money.
