With the additions of veterans Corey Perry and Michael Frolik, Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin continues to make moves in what has been an already busy off-season.
It’s been a busy week for the Montreal Canadiens.
After enduring a rocky 2019-20 season salvaged by a solid performance in last season’s expanded 24 team playoff format, Habs GM Marc Bergevin made a number of big-time acquisitions over the course of this off-season. Fan-favourite Max Domi was shipped to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for power forward Josh Anderson, consistent 20 goal scorer Tyler Toffoli was signed to a four-year deal, Jake Allen was acquired to finally give Carey Price some solid backup goaltending, and Joel Edmundson was thrown into our defensive depth just for good measure.
It’s been a breath of fresh air from a GM who had done little in the name of big moves over the past few seasons, aside from the absolute blunder that was Karl Alzner. However, in spite of these numerous signings and acquisitions, Bergevin made it clear that he wasn’t done adding pieces just yet. Over this past week, he’s done just that, inking veteran forwards Michael Frolik and Corey Perry to one-year deals at league-minimum.
Following a rough 2019-20 season that saw him struggle to produce offensively with both the Calgary Flames and Buffalo Sabres, Frolik comes to the Canadiens as a depth option, which will most likely be a part of the team’s taxi squad. A veteran of 850 NHL games, the former 10th overall pick in the 2006 draft has seen his high and lows over the course of his career, from an impressive 45-point rookie season with the Florida Panthers, to a more defensive role with the Chicago Blackhawks, to being a consistent 40-point player once more with the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames.
