Montreal Canadiens: Cole Caufield Scores Twice in 35 Seconds
Montreal Canadiens prospect Cole Caufield scored twice in a matter of seconds.
Montreal Canadiens prospect Cole Caufield has all the skills and tools to be a dominant offensive players at this year’s World Junior tournament. He showed that in a terrific shift to start the second period tonight.
Caufield didn’t get on the score sheet in the first period as the Americans and Finland played to a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes. However, he wasted little time scoring in the second period and then didn’t hesitate to do so again.
The first round pick from the 2019 NHL Draft was fairly quiet at last year’s World Juniors. He scored one goal and one assist in five games, but will be counted on to bring more offence at this year’s tournament in Edmonton, Alberta.
He proved he was ready to do just that. In his first shift of the second period, he converted a great pass from Trevor Zegras to give USA a 2-1 lead. Caufield cruised into the slot, knowing Zegras could find him with a pinpoint pass at any second. When Zegras fed the puck to Caufield’s tape, the Habs prospect hammered a one-timer into the Finnish goal.
Just 35 seconds later, Caufield would extend the USA lead to 3-1. He almost did it quicker when a breakaway pass just hopped over his stick. Caufield chased down the loose puck to keep possession, moved it around the offensive zone before getting it again down low. He swept around the Finland net and fired a backhander into the top corner over the goaltender’s blocker.
Just like that Caufield turned a 1-1 game into a 3-1 lead for the United States. He has an incredible ability to put pucks in the net and looks poised to have an excellent tournament. Both goals were scored at even strength with one being a quick one-timer as he got loose in the slot and the other showing far more strength and skill down low.
Caufield may have only scored one goal and two points last year, but he just proved he can match that production in a shift this year.
