Montreal Canadiens former players that are free agents and should be signed by someone soon.

The Montreal Canadiens had a handful of pending free agents during the 2019-20 NHL season. However, as the trade deadline approached, most of them were shipped out of town for draft picks.

General Manager Marc Bergevin dealt pretty much every player who had an expiring contract and built up his draft capital as much as he could.

Out were Marco Scandella, Ilya Kovalchuk, Nate Thompson, Nick Cousins and even Matthew Peca who was playing for the Laval Rocket.

That didn’t leave a lot of free agents on the team as the season actually ended in August. Dale Weise and Christian Folin were still around and they remain on the free agent market today. That shouldn’t be a huge surprise, but a few other former Habs players who remain on the open market deserve another chance at the NHL level.

These players may not necessarily make a lot of sense for the Canadiens to bring back, but they can still help out an organization and would likely come very cheap. The market has quickly dried up for free agents and top six options like Mike Hoffman and Mikael Granlund are still waiting for a fair offer.

Meanwhile, decent depth players like Joakim Nordstrom, Josh Leivo, and Dominik Simon taking contracts that are paying them minimum NHL wage or very close to it. Each of these players can still play on a fourth line and the Calgary Flames added some much needed depth for cheap by signing all three.

There are still plenty of depth players on the open market and it looks like they are going to have to accept less than a million dollars on a one year contract if they want to find work in this market.

Three of those players happen to be former Habs and they deserve to find work with someone in the near future.
