Max Domi has an interesting position with the Montreal Canadiens, and his future with the organization will determine the course of action.

Hockey, like many professional sports, has a lot of pressure that comes with it. If you’re a highly-touted prospect, a big investment via free agency or the main acquisition in a trade, all eyes are on you to ensure you deliver on the optimism that comes with your entry. Max Domi was the most recent recipient of pressure upon his first season with the Montreal Canadiens, but he handled it well and delivered.

The Habs didn’t make the playoffs, but with 28 goals and 44 assists for 72 points in 82 games, Domi could shake off any misdirected blame. He joined the team and exceeded expectations of what many thought he could do at centre in Montreal.

Even though the 2019-20 season didn’t go as expected, he still produced at a 50-point pace. Not the same as his debut, but something to build off on. Domi’s 4 goals and 4 assists in 7 games in the final half of February was closer to what Habs fans saw of him last year, the question was whether he could get back to that consistently.

There is too much ambiguity around Max Domi right now. It seems as if the Montreal Canadiens have every intention of signing him as he’s a pending restricted free agent. He could’ve made the decision easier for Marc Bergevin if he had another 70-point season; however, the drop off this year does complicate things.
