Victor Mete is the next big RFA for the Montreal Canadiens after Max Domi, and it’s possible the team uses his year to make his extension a valuable one.

The 2019-20 season was meant to be a big one for Victor Mete. He was entering the final year of his entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens and had the number two spot next to Shea Weber locked up in training camp. Even though Mete was going into his third NHL season without a goal to his name, the window of opportunity to cash in was large and inviting.

Mete did manage to tick off some of those milestones for himself. The 21-year-old scored the first of four in Montreal’s 4-0 win over the Minnesota Wild. It was a long time coming for Mete, but he finally found the back of the net off a Nick Cousins helper.

The defenceman would add three more goals for the Montreal Canadiens, all at even strength, giving the team another offensive weapon on the backend aside from Shea Weber, Jeff Petry, and a shockingly productive year from newly acquired Ben Chiarot. Unfortunately, and similarly to his previous seasons, his play away from the puck saw him stripped of responsibilities.

Claude Julien bumped Mete down on the totem pole giving the likes of Brett Kulak and Marco Scandella an opportunity to ride shotgun with Weber before giving the spot to Chiarot. Kulak slotted in on the second pair while Mete once again found himself on the bottom pair.
