Teams are throwing offers for players with the deadline coming, and according to Pierre Lebrun, the Montreal Canadiens got a trade offer for Jeff Petry.
The twisted irony behind this latest set of news with Jeff Petry is interesting. The Montreal Canadiens and the Carolina Hurricanes have been connected since the Habs made the first offer sheet attempt in years on Sebastian Aho. The attempt didn’t work as the Hurricanes came back to match the signed offer sheet keeping the star centre in Carolina.
It moved over to the Jake Gardiner sweepstakes, which both teams were in on with the Canes winning that one. However, you can argue the Habs dodged a bullet there.
Now it seems like the two teams may come together for a trade. According to Pierre Lebrun, the Carolina Hurricanes made an offer for Jeff Petry. Said offer would have Petry jump divisions in exchange for Jake Bean and a first-round pick.

Petry has been discussed by hockey minds as a player the Montreal Canadiens may want to consider moving on from. The defenceman does have another year on his deal, and Marc Bergevin made it clear he wants the team to be competitive next season. That said, it’s also been floated around that it would take a significant deal to get Montreal to trade Petry, which would need to include a first.
Carolina has that covered. They have two first-round picks as they got a second from the Toronto Maple Leafs for taking on Patrick Marleau‘s contract and buying it out. The Habs would likely want the better of the two picks, but Jake Bean being included in the deal is significant.
Bean was a first-round pick from 2016, going 16th overall. He had a great debut season with the Charolette Checkers putting up 13 goals and 31 assists in 70 games. The 21-year-old is a left-shot defenceman with size, can skate and make plays and, most importantly, is smart with the puck and the decisions he makes.
Bean only has two NHL games to his name, but the future is bright for the player, and many believe his season is astronomical. This could be the Habs’ long-term option to man the top-four of their defence for seasons to come. The question is whether the team thinks just the pick and Bean is enough.
It’ll be interesting to see how this progresses, but if these are the initial offers on Petry, it will be difficult for Marc Bergevin to shut them all down.
