Cayden Primeau had an unforgettable debut with the Montreal Canadiens against the New Jersey Devils hinting at a future Carey Price would be proud of.

Before I begin, I should probably make a few things clear. Firstly, I understand that the Montreal Canadiens are playing preseason games that have little to no importance accept to evaluate and experiment with lineup decisions. Secondly, I understand that the New Jersey Devils iced a weaker roster compared to the squad who was taking on the Boston Bruins. And thirdly, I understand that goaltenders can sometimes be voodoo and you never know how they’ll turn out.

However, Cayden Primeau was a star last night! The Habs were up 2-1 when Claude Julien gave the 2017 seventh-round pick a chance in net, and he was tested very quickly.

Blake Coleman and Nico Hischier caught the Montreal Canadiens on a two-on-one with only Xavier Ouellet back to help. It was a go-to one-time situation but with a powerful push-off the post, Primeau was there to stop the puck. What a way to get your first “NHL” save, wouldn’t you say?

Primeau had another big stop in the third period while the Habs were killing a penalty. Kyle Palmeri got the step up on the penalty killers and headed to the net. He moved the puck to his backhand and attempted to roof it over Primeau, but again, the goaltender made the save to keep the game at two apiece.

It wasn’t a perfect night for Primeau. He did allow a goal, but it was off an awkward bounce after trying to clear the puck.

Putting things into perspective, it is only one preseason game. That said, we were all excited to see what Primeau could do in the NHL given his game-saving tendencies at Northeastern University, and fans experienced that Monday night. It was very Carey Price like as the star goaltender has a knack of making those incredible saves on a game-by-game basis (for example).

Perhaps this is the beginning of a confident run for Primeau in the organization. He’ll have to beat out Charlie Lindgren and Michael McNiven for minutes with the Laval Rocket, but if he keeps that up, there’s no reason why he won’t get them. And if you ask Joël Bouchard, he’s looking forward to what Primeau can bring to the table.
