We’ve hit another milestone for the year which will see Montreal Canadiens prospects kick things off as Rookie Camp opens today.

Hockey is back (kind of). Training camp may not start for another week, but the Montreal Canadiens prospects are set to get their camp going today.

The Habs will have 28 players taking part in rookie camp with three odd omissions. Andrew Zadarnowski pointed this out on Twitter, but Lukas Vejdemo, Antoine Waked, and David Sklenicka are all eligible to be invited to camp – as they have entry-level deals with the Habs – and weren’t.

Why? Who knows.

Vejdemo was one of the best performers at last year’s camp and carried that into a good rookie season with the Laval Rocket. Waked and Sklenicka still have things to prove, especially the former.

On the bright side, the likes of Nick Suzuki, Ryan Poehling, Josh Brook, and Cayden Primeau are set to participate. Day One will just have a practice at 3:00 PM EST at Bell Sports Complex as will Day Two at 10:00 AM EST and Day Three at 11:15 AM EST.

The Montreal Canadiens will play their first game of the tournament Saturday evening against the Ottawa Senators.  Erik Brännström is going to be the player to watch as he paves his own path to a roster spot this season. The Winnipeg Jets will be the Habs’ next challengers followed by the team’s annual Children’s Foundation golf tournament in Laval on Monday.

Rookie Camp finishes off with a friendly game against a team composed of players from Concordia, Trois-Rivières and McGill University. After that, main training camp begins.

The Tournament is going to be an important one for those hoping to make the Montreal Canadiens this season. Management watches and pays attention to who stands out, and it could be good for Suzuki and Poehling to start off on the right foot.

Max Domi is not the player the Montreal Canadiens trade to improve

Trades are one of the main methods to improve in the NHL, and if the Habs are on the verge of doing it, it shouldn’t be Max Domi going the other way.
