Montreal Canadiens Cole Caufield starts his season in scoring style
Montreal Canadiens prospect Cole Caufield is expected to have a productive year with the Wisconsin Badgers and is off to a great start already.
Goals, goals, and more goals are what the Montreal Canadiens are looking forward to seeing from first-round pick Cole Caufield. The 18-year-old set the U.S. National Team on fire – along with Jack Hughes – that had him as one of the most dangerous players in the draft.
He showed off not only his goal-scoring but his ability to find open ice at Habs development camp. Caufield saw some decent minutes with 2017 first-round pick Ryan Poehling and put the puck in the net a couple of times during the shootout.
It continued on playing for Team USA at the World Junior Summer Showcase scoring goals so incredible he was all over the TSN Twitter account. Caufield is a special player, and the University of Wisconsin will be happy to have him producing for them this year, which kicked off their exhibition games Friday night.
The Badgers took on the University of British Columbia shooting them out 3-0. Wisconsin scored in each of the three periods of the game, and as fate would have it, Cole Caufield started things off offensively.
It was a good play from Linus Weissbach who got the puck in the right corner and send a cross-crease pass to Caufield who was trailing from behind on the left.
If Caufield has teammates who make plays like that, it’ll be a cakewalk for him this year. It’s those offensive instincts he has to drive to the net which the Montreal Canadiens are going to appreciate. He’s fearless and does whatever he can to put himself in a position to score making use of his speed to get in ahead of the opposition.
Of course, it is just one game, and it is only preseason. However, these exhibition games are going to be important for Caufield to find chemistry with his linemates, especially those who can make good and strong plays.
It looks as if the line of Weissbach on the left, Caufield on the right, and 2019 fifth-overall pick Alex Turcotte down the middle will be the first shot of something special this year. But it’s a long time between now and April.
The Badgers have had players in the past eclipse the 20-goal mark such as Danny Heatley, Joe Pavelski, and 2016 first-round pick of the Minnesota Wild Luke Kunin. Scoring in college hockey isn’t as “easy” as it is in the CHL, but it will say a lot about Caufield’s abilities if he can finish in the high teens or reach the milestone altogether.
