Montreal Canadiens Cole Caufield Scores Beautiful Goal At Summer Showcase
The Montreal Canadiens made the steal of the 2019 NHL Draft when they selected Cole Caufield 15th overall. He is already making them look good by lighting up the World Junior Summer Showcase.
The Montreal Canadiens were fortunate to have Cole Caufield fall to them at the 2019 NHL Draft. I mean, the guy scored 72 goals in 64 games for the United States National Development Team. No one has scored at that rate for that program since … ever.
There were a few concerns about Caufileld’s game that had him slide from what should have been a top five pick, all the way to the middle of the draft. First, too much credit, as he is proving this week, was given to his centre Jack Hughes.
Hughes is an exceptional playmaker and went first overall for a reason. However, he was not the only reason that Caufield scored more than a goal per game.
The other concern is Caufield’s size. He is listed at just 5’7″ but size has become less and less of a factor in the NHL. He’s barely any smaller than Alex Debrincat or Brad Marchand and I don’t think the Chicago Blackhawks or Boston Bruins regret taking a chance on those undersized wingers.
Caufield is off to Wisconsin next season where he will surely score many goals. But first, he is at the World Junior Summer Showcase this week, trying out for the USA team that will represent their country at the World Junior Championships in December and January over in the Czech Republic.
USA are playing Canada tonight, and the Canadians were leading 2-0 heading into the third period. Caufield cut that deficit in half by sniping a beautiful goal short side on the power play from his favourite spot.
He moves the puck down low and then jumps closer to the net to get himself into a better shooting position. He gets the puck back almost immediately and just rips it over the goaltenders shoulder on the short side.
It is just another example of Caufield’s ability to put the puck in the net. He wasn’t on the best angle, but the goaltender gave him a little bit of room in the top corner and he found it quickly. He has a laser of a shot with pinpoint accuracy which is what makes him so dangerous.
There is no question Caufield is not only going to make this American team, but be a focal point of their attack. It won’t be long before he is doing the same thing on the Montreal Canadiens power play.
