The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed left winger Charles Hudon to a one-year contract.

The Montreal Canadiens announced that left winger Charles Hudon has re-signed with the team. He inked a one-year, one-way contract that will have him earn $800,000 next season no matter where he plays.

Where Hudon will suit up next season is still up in the air. He played well in 2017-18, dressing for 71 NHL games, scoring ten goals and 30 points. It was thought at that time he would be a bottom six contributor for the Habs going forward.

Last season he hit a bit of a roadblock though. The Alma, Quebec native played 32 games with the Canadiens but scored just three goals and five points. His last game was in the middle of February as he was pushed to the press box for the final two months of the season due to his ineffective play.

Hudon will head into training camp looking to prove himself all over again to the Habs management team. There is a job opening on the fourth line, but he will be in a battle with veterans like Nick Cousins, Nate Thompson, Matthew Peca and Dale Weise for that role.

He was originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Canadiens. His smallish stature must have been what had him slide in the draft because it was not his tenacious play or ability to put up points that resulted in him being drafted so late.

Hudon scored 25 goals and 66 points in 59 games for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in his draft year. He was an excellent two-way winger for the Sagueneens and later the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The 25 year old winger then played three great seasons in the American Hockey League after turning pro in 2014. He produced 19, 28 and 27 goal seasons for various AHL affiliates of the Canadiens before his rookie NHL season in 2017-18.

Hudon still has a battle ahead of him to try and make it back into the NHL lineup. Whether he is a fourth line winger on the Canadiens or a first line winger on the Laval Rocket will be decided in training camp. Either way, due to his one-way deal, he will be earning $800,000 next season.
