It was an emotional night watching the first round of the 2019 NHL draft as the Montreal Canadiens got Cole Caufield, and Twitter reacted accordingly.
No breakdowns, no statistics (alright maybe a couple), and no in-depth analysis. Whether anyone wants to admit it, the Montreal Canadiens hit the jackpot Friday night being able to select Cole Caufield fifteenth overall.
Where were you when it happened? Were you calm and collected, or were you shaking trying to contain yourself instantly screaming, “NO PLEASE NO,” anytime a general manager gave a possible sign of drafting Caufield?
Tension grew as soon as pick six came and it wasn’t Caufield’s name being called. Detroit was the first heart clutch as they took Moritz Seider sixth overall who was originally projected later in the 10s. The Edmonton Oilers then decided to take defenceman Philip Broberg eighth overall instead of a position they desperately need high-end skill in.
You may argue they’re fine because they have 50-goal scorer Leon Draisaitl. Fair, but Draisaitl should be a centre whereas Jesse Puljujarvi, who they took fourth overall in 2016, has requested a trade out of the organization. Adding Caufield would’ve been an amazing opportunity to have another ridiculous finisher on their roster. Oh well, better for the Habs.
The peak of the freak out was Philadelphia at 14. By that point, the Montreal Canadiens were in range.
TAKE HIM! TAKE HIM NOW! #Habs

And take him they did. Montreal Canadiens captain Shea Weber announced the team’s selection, Caufield made his way to the stage, and Twitter blew up!
Cole Caufield not taken in the top 10. This should be fun to retweet in a few years.

Two years from now: "How did so many teams pass on Cole Caufield?!"

Cole Caufield fell to Montreal. I'm shocked. Legitimately shocked. #Habs

COLE CAUFIELD IS A MONTREAL CANADIEN

WE DID IT REDDIT
That is one big smile of relief from Cole Caufield. Glad to see the Habs finally end that wait and hopefully get themselves one heck of a steal. #NHLDraft

Yes, they did it. The Montreal Canadiens likely wanted to add defence and Thomas Harley was still on the board. They easily could’ve taken him but they did the right thing and took the best player available. The goal scoring in of itself speaks for itself and Caufield is going to be an absolute force.
But it wasn’t all positive. There were many frustrated Philadelphia Flyers fans who didn’t understand the team taking defenceman Cam York with a number of defenders in the system already, especially at the expense of Caufield.

Can’t believe the Flyers passed on both Cole Caufield and Peyton Krebs. Both names were still available at #14. Can’t say I thought those two would be there at 14. 11 maybe but my goodness. What makes it even worse is the Flyers decided to pass on them.

HE WAS RIGHT THERE..... RIGHT THERE...... COLE CAUFIELD WAS LITERALLY RIGHT IN THE FLYERS LAP........

That’s the beauty and the curse of the NHL Draft. Sometimes the team you follow can take the one you love, and other times you don’t. What was a dark moment for other teams was a great one for the Montreal Canadiens and it’ll be agonizing waiting to see what Caufield can do with the likes of Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Ryan Poehling and Nick Suzuki.
